Internet celebrity Li Ziqi released the final episode of her popular video series - "The Life of White Radish" - on social media platforms on January 9.
The video has been hugely popular online with more than 4.34 million views and over 220,000 likes.
In the video, she introduced the Chinese custom of pickling food in the winter by telling the story of the radish's "life" from growing up to being made into pickles.
However, South Korean netizens were quick to react and accused Li Ziqi of copying the process of making kimchi.
While China has its own pickled vegetable dish -- paocai -- the preparation method and ingredient selection differs from kimchi. The choice of ingredients and method shown in Li’s video were very similar to that of kimchi.

In fact, this is not the first time the two countries' internet users have argued over the issue of cultural identity.
The Li Ziqi debate has since crossed over to Chinese social media platform Weibo where the hashtag #Li Ziqi making kimchi besieged by Korean netizens# has climbed to over 820 million views. Most comments expressed frustration with South Korean netizens. Many said much of traditional Korean culture owes itself to Chinese culture to some extent.
China has issued an international standard for making paocai under the ISO framework, according to the China Market Regulation News.
The Meishan Market Supervision Bureau in southwest Sichuan Province has led the efforts to promote the paocai standard, as the city is the birthplace of Sichuan paocai, one of the oldest paocai categories in China.
The ISO has emphasized that paocai and kimchi are different. Kimchi is already registered in the CODEX, a global food standard, and South Korea is not currently pushing for the registration of a standard on Korean-style kimchi.
During a regular press conference on December 1, a Reuters reporter asked: "Does the foreign ministry have any comment on the ongoing online disagreements between Chinese and ROK media about the origins of the ROK food kimchi? "
"Are there any disagreements on this? I'm not aware of it. But between China and the ROK, I think cooperation and shared benefits surely overweigh that," said Hua Chunying.
